Mental Capacity Act and DOLS Awareness

Duration: Half Day Course

The Mental Capacity Act (MCA) came into force in 2005 and was designed to strengthen the protection of vulnerable adults. This was followed by The Deprivation of Liberties Safeguards (DOLS) being implemented in 2009. This course provides the background to the MCA and its relationship to DOLS, and how those working within the Care Sector can ensure compliance, to ensure the best interests of those that they care for, who may or may not be able to consent.

Learning Outcomes:
  • To be able to Identify the 5 principles of the Act.
  • To understand the need to support each person to make decisions.
  • To be aware of what to do if there is doubt about the capacity of an individual to make a particular decision.
  • The need for DOLS and lawful deprivation of liberty
  • Be aware of what constitutes a deprivation of liberty.
  • How to record information about the decision making process with a service user
  • Understand the new roles under the Mental Capacity Act.
